HAFLONG: Benla Kemprai, an 18-year-old student from Tularam Raji, Haflong, has made her district and state proud by winning a bronze medal at the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand.
The daughter of Ramendra and Enola Kemprai, Benla became the youngest member of the Assam Taekwondo Team and made history with her remarkable performance.
Though she lost to Arunachal Pradesh in the semi-final of the Taekwondo Group Poomsae Team event, she appealed for a medal and was awarded a bronze for her efforts.
Benla and her team have been preparing for the National Games for the past three months in Puducherry, training under the supervision of Anuj K. Hagjer, the coach and general secretary of the Dima Hasao Taekwondo Association.
She also received guidance from Biva Bhusan Chakrabarty, an international referee in Taekwondo Poomsae, and Harsha Singha, an international athlete representing Team India.
The residents of Dima Hasao are overjoyed with Benla’s achievement, as it has brought pride and recognition to the district. With the support and leadership of EM Probita Johari from the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, the Taekwondo player has successfully made her mark in one of India’s most prestigious sporting events.
