Pathsala: The daily market in Pathsala, a hub for locals seeking fresh produce and everyday essentials, is now facing a growing issue: a persistent bad smell and unhygienic conditions. As the market continues to draw crowds, vendors and customers alike are increasingly concerned about the unpleasant odour that has taken over the area, raising alarm about the poor sanitation and the health risks that follow.
What was once a lively and convenient shopping spot is now becoming notorious for its unbearable stench, a result of uncollected waste, spoiled food, and poor hygiene practices. The foul smell is not only affecting the shopping experience but is also posing serious health concerns for the community. For many, the overwhelming bad smell in the market is the most noticeable issue. The stench is particularly strong near areas where spoiled vegetables, fish, and raw meats are sold, with waste being left unattended for long periods of time. In some sections of the market, rotting produce is piled up in open areas, attracting flies and vermin.
The town of Pathsala was described as clean. But the daily market shows the dark reality of the town.
“The smell here is unbearable. It’s hard to even walk around without holding your nose,” said a regular shopper at the market. “The market used to be a place where we could get fresh food, but now it feels like a health hazard.”
Local vendors are also feeling the impact. Many have voiced their frustration over the conditions, stating that the smell is driving away potential customers. Despite their efforts to clean up their stalls, they are powerless to control the overall condition of the market.
