DIBRUGARH: The Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) has reiterated its directive requiring all shops and business establishments to display signboards in both Assamese and English. This move aims to promote the local language and culture.

The corporation had initially issued an official order on September 17, 2024, instructing shop and business owners to include Assamese alongside English on their signboards within 30 days. However, many establishments have yet to comply, continuing to display signboards only in English.

In response, the municipal authorities have issued a final reminder, instructing all business owners to update their signboards with Assamese text within 30 days from March 26, 2025. Failure to comply will result in appropriate action as per municipal regulations.

Meanwhile, in a significant policy shift, the Assam government has announced that the Assamese language will soon be made compulsory in all English-medium schools affiliated with the state board and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

This decision follows the recommendations of the Justice Biplab Sarma Committee and aligns with Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, which emphasizes the promotion of the Assamese language.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the new policy, emphasizing the government's interest in preserving and promoting the Assamese language in the educational system. The new policy aims to strengthen the understanding of students about their linguistic heritage and cultural identity.
