Mangaldai: The General Secretary of the Asom Rajyik Nirman Mazdoor Union, Krishna Bora, has urged the State government to ensure the effective implementation of various welfare schemes recommended by the Assam Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board (ABOCEWB) under the BOCW (RE&CS) Act, 1996.
Speaking at the open session of the fifth biennial conference of the Darrang district unit of the construction workers’ union at the District Library Auditorium on Wednesday, Bora expressed concern over the growing number of registered workers being deprived of their rightful benefits. These include pension, financial assistance for cancer patients, death and accident benefits, as well as marriage and educational assistance, allegedly due to government apathy.
The open session, part of a two-day event, was also addressed by veteran academician Dr. Bijoy Kr. Sarma, District Labour Officer Prashenjit Talukdar, prominent industrialist Mukul Ch. Deka, senior journalist Mayukh Goswami, and Jon Sonowal, General Secretary of the All Assam Motor Workers Federation.
Earlier, Bhupen Baruah, General Secretary of the Darrang district unit of the union, outlined the objectives of the meet. The two-day celebration featured a workers’ cultural rally, plantation drives, and a community cleanliness campaign.
On the inaugural day, the union elected a new 31-member executive body for the Darrang district unit, with Moromee Barua Kalita as president and Bhupen Baruah as general secretary. A women’s wing of the district committee was also formed, with Bhanu Das as president and Kalpana Saikia as general secretary. The event commenced with the hoisting of the organizational flag by Padmeswar Sahariah, president of the Darrang district unit of the Asom Rajyik Nirman Mazdoor Union.
