Assam: Elderly lady Kusumbala Barman passes away in Doomdooma

Kusumbala Barman, wife of Late Hari Barman of Kamarpatti, old AT Road, passed away at the home of her son Dr Bhupen Barman, retired Principal, Chabua College, due to old-age-related ailments.

DOOMDOOMA: Kusumbala Barman, wife of Late Hari Barman of Kamarpatti, old AT Road, passed away at the home of her son Dr Bhupen Barman, retired Principal, Chabua College, on Monday morning due to old-age-related ailments.

She was 94 and is survived by one son, two daughters-in-law, and four married daughters. She was a member of the Mahila Samaj of Doomdooma Asamiya Puja Ghar, Doomdooma Namghar, and other socio-religious organizations. She is one of the founders of the Lakshmi Temple on Thana Road. Kusumbala Barman spent the past few years with her son Bhupen.

During the Assam Movement, she survived a bullet injury which pierced her stomach when the police resorted to firing to disperse an agitated mob in 1978. Incidentally, the Assam Existence Movement was launched in November 1979 when security forces opened fire from the Doomdooma Police Station premises to disperse the protesters.

Her death cast a pall of gloom and was mourned by organizations like Lakshmi Mandir, Doomdooma Asamiya Puja Aru Natya Mandir Samiti, Doomdooma Namghar, Doomdooma Sakha Xahitya Xabha, Krishna Mandir, Doomdooma Senior Citizens Association, Doomdooma Shiv Mandir, Doomdooma Anchalik Samiti of Warriors, etc. Her cremation took place at Dibrugarh yesterday in presence of the local residents of the area.
