Assam: Election peacefully held with 62 percent voter turnout in Nagaon

The second phase of Panchayat polls in Nagaon district was held almost peacefully with 62 percent voter turnout.

NAGAON: The second phase of Panchayat polls in Nagaon district was held almost peacefully with 62 percent voter turnout till the time of filing of this report on Wednesday here. It’s expected that the voting percentage may slightly increase in the district.

The voting was started at 7.30 AM and completed within the stipulated time at almost all polling stations except a few where the voting process was underway till the time of filing of this report here.

Shashi Kanta Das, MLA of Raha constituency, exercised his franchise at Dimou Polling Station and Congress MLA Sibamoni Bora exercised her franchise at Jajori Polling Station while Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi cast his vote at Morikolong Bengenati LP School-based polling station. Congress MP Rakibul Hussain exercised his franchise at Samaguri Lorimukh LP School-based polling station. The election was conducted for 21 Zila Parishad seats, 132 Anchalik Panchayat seats, and 1411 Gaon Panchayat seats in seven assembly constituencies in the district.

It’s pertinent to mention that among 27 Zila Parishad seats, 6 candidates from the ruling alliance have been declared uncontested and out of 164 Anchalik Panchayat seats, 32 candidates from the ruling alliance were declared uncontested. Similarly, among 1460 Gaon Panchayat seats, 229 candidates were declared uncontested earlier by the District Election Officer.

A total of 58 candidates participated in the ballot battle for 21 Zila Parishad seats and 327 candidates took part in the contest for Anchalik Panchayat seats while 3704 candidates were in the fray for Gaon Panchayat seats in the district this time here.
