TINSUKIA: A man, identified as Surajit Moran, a surrendered member of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), was arrested on Thursday for allegedly extorting money using the name of the banned ULFA-I group.

Moran, also known as Koliya, reportedly demanded money from victims, claiming it was for the medical treatment of a ULFA-I member. His extortion activities came to light after a tea trader from Nalani, Pengeree, filed a complaint stating that Moran had asked for money under the false pretext.

Based on the trader's complaint, police arrested Mintu Moran on December 2, 2024. Further investigation revealed Surajit Moran's involvement in the racket, leading to his arrest.

Moran has been remanded to judicial custody by Pengeree police. The authorities continue to investigate the case and are working to uncover any other links in the extortion network.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Duliajan Police arrested four extortionists, including a fake ULFA cadre, and recovered a crude IED device, arms, and cash from Duliajan on Friday evening.

The arrested individuals were identified as Bharat Hazari from Tengakhat, Bolin Gogoi, Bitupon Gogoi alias Jayanta Asom, and Vinod Pahariya. Based on an initial FIR, which had been lodged regarding extortion demands made to three businessmen from an unidentified SIM card, Duliajan Police, led by Officer-In-Charge Bhaskar Saikia, had arrested Bharat Hazari from Tengakhat. Subsequent investigation led them to Bolin Gogoi, Bitupon Gogoi, and Vinod Pahariya.
