HAILAKANDI: In a joint operation conducted by the police along with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), fake currency notes amounting to a total of Rs. 1.05 lakh has been seized in Assam's Hailakandi district.

The operations have been conducted in the area of Abdullahpur Part II falling under the jurisdiction of Lala Police Station. During the operation, a local betel nut trader identified as Abul Hussain Barbhuiya was arrested with 210 duplicate Rs. 500 notes. The operation was led by a team from the 147th Battalion of CRPF, stationed in Kashipur, Silchar.

This operation is adding to the growing investigation into fake currency activities in the region. Earlier, the State Task Force (STF) had made a big breakthrough in Guwahati in connection with case number 20/2024, concerning the circulation of counterfeit currency.

In this earlier operation, three persons—Mofidul Islam (29), Nurjamal Islam (20), and Abdul Kalam (30)—were arrested in Tegheria, under Khetri Police Station. Besides, the authorities seized a Swift Dzire vehicle, AS 01 EP 5476, allegedly used to transport the counterfeit notes, along with five mobile phones connected to the accused.

The law enforcement agencies are continuing the probe into the connections between the two operations and are also examining the possibility of a much larger counterfeit currency network operating in Assam. Further inquiries are being made to obtain further details and possible connections with other crimes.
