SILCHAR: The start of 2025 has been overshadowed by tragedy as a fatal road accident claimed one life and left four others critically injured. A group of five friends and family members from the Uttar Krishnapur area of Silchar had set out to celebrate the New Year near the Borail Hills in Dima Hasao.
While traveling from Silchar to Haflong, their vehicle, a Bolero, lost control near Ditokcherra on the Silchar-Haflong road and collided head-on with an approaching truck.
Bappu Barbhuiya, a passenger, died instantly due to the severe impact of the crash. The other occupants—Nippu Laskar, Anwar Sadat Laskar, Parul Laskar, and Tinku Chowdhury—sustained critical injuries.
They were initially taken to a local hospital but were later transferred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) for further treatment. All are currently in intensive care.
Preliminary reports suggest that the group may have been inebriated at the time of the accident. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. The tragic incident has deeply affected the Silchar community, dimming the spirit of the New Year.
Meanwhile, earlier last month, a tragic incident unfolded on December 23 at the Aradonga picnic spot, located near the Assam-Meghalaya border, when 56-year-old Gautam Ganguly tragically lost his life after slipping into a stream.
Ganguly, a resident of Hatat Colony, Rest Camp in Pandu, Guwahati, was visiting the popular site with a picnic group in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills District.
Local residents found Ganguly's body in a nearby stream and promptly notified the police. Samuel Sangma, the in-charge of the Athiabari Police Outpost, swiftly arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and sent it to Riangdo for a post-mortem examination.
