GUWAHATI: The Guwahati police has arrested a gang of five individuals for their alleged involvement in a statewide grand theft auto operation. Sources reveal that the Crime Branch of the Guwahati Police apprehended the suspects based on specific intelligence inputs.
Although the source did not disclose the details of the arrest, it was revealed that the five suspects had been actively involved in vehicle theft for several years. The gang typically targets parked vehicles in public areas where the owners are not present.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Raju Das from Nalbari, Montu Barman from Nalbari, Junmoni Deka from Baksa, Raju Deka from Barpeta, and Jayanta Haloi from Noonmati in Guwahati.
The gang is suspected of being active not only in Assam but also in other parts of the Northeast. The police are investigating potential cross-border connections.
Meanwhile, in the previous month, a significant car theft racket involving stolen vehicles from Assam and their sale in Manipur had been uncovered by the Dispur police.
The gang, led by Rustam Ali, Inamul Ali, and Ali Akbar from Assam, targeted luxury vehicles, including Boleros, in the Christian Basti area of Dispur. The stolen vehicles were sold at a fraction of their market value to three youths from Manipur: Ratan Singh, Rishikesh Singh, and Lanjung Po Golam.
This racket fueled a car theft market in the region, with the police discovering a widespread theft and sale operation involving both states. The police managed to trap the gang through coordinated efforts, leading to the arrest of several individuals and the disruption of the racket.
