Guwahati: As the flood situation in Assam continues to remain grim, the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Sunday deployed its transport aircraft and helicopters to rescue people from the flood-hit areas.
"#FloodReliefInAssam Efforts are continuing to evacuate citizens and airlift rescue teams and relief material to areas cut off due to floods in Assam. #IAF has deployed its transport aircraft and helicopters for the task," IAF tweeted.
On Saturday, the IAF deployed two Mi-17 helicopters, one each of a Chinook helicopter, An-32 transport aircraft and an ALH Dhruv expedite which helped them in rescuing more than 119 passengers stranded at Ditokchera railway station.
As per the ANI report, a total of 20 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have been positioned in the flood-affected areas while working closely with the state government.
So far, a total of 24,749 stranded persons have been rescued with the help of the Indian Army, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), NDRF and volunteers.
The flood has affected nearly 6.80 lakh people in 31 districts.
In view of the current flood and landslide situation in the State, Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua on Saturday reviewed the flood preparedness along with Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), even as the overall death toll in the first phase of flood and resultant landslides climbed to 18.
The Chief Secretary further expedited the response and recovery services by the deployment of additional resources and support systems to the severely-affected districts. Some major decisions have been taken in the last 24 hours in this regard.
