DIGBOI: The electorates hailing from Betoni village under Doomdooma assembly constituency in Tinsukia district of Upper Assam reportedly did not turn up to exercise their right to franchise in the ongoing Panchayat polls here on Friday.

According to the aggrieved villagers, the voters unanimously decided to boycott the poll allegedly due to forceful delimitation, attaching the village to Balugada ward under Doomdooma segment much against the interest of the general people of the village.

“We were happy earlier being the part of Digboi Assembly constituency falling under Ward No. 2 of 20 No. Borhapjan Gaon Panchayat,” said a youth near the polling station while refusing to participate in the democratic process of franchise, a citizen’s political right.

“We are worst affected by the recent government’s act of delimitation. We do not even know the contesting candidates and have no faces to vote for nor any awareness was created to develop acquaintances,” alleged a female electorate hailing from the Moran community.

“We demand of the Chief Minister of Assam to reattach our village to Digboi segment or else we would continue boycotting the poll process in the days to come,” urged an elderly voter of the village.

When cross-checked with the polling officials, it was reported that only nine voters who were relatives of a contesting candidate had cast their votes in the polling station till the time of filing this report.
