GOLAGHAT: In a major crackdown on illegal timber trade, Forest Department officials today raided South Hengera under Golaghat and seized illegally stocked timber worth about ₹1.5 lakh. The drive resulted in the arrest of the main suspect, Babul Ali.

Sources indicate that Ali had been operating an unauthorized timber business for nearly a year without the required permits. Acting on a confidential tip-off, a specialized team from the Forest Department executed the raid at his residence, where they discovered a substantial quantity of illegally stored wood.

Forest officials have confirmed that a comprehensive investigation is currently underway to uncover the broader network associated with this illegal trade. They suspect that further inquiries may lead to the identification of additional individuals involved in the timber racket.

Babul Ali is presently in custody and is undergoing interrogation to provide more information regarding the origins and distribution channels of the timber. The officials have promised to take stern legal action against all involved in this illegal practice.

The successful raid is a milestone in the Forest Department's long battle against illegal deforestation and timber smuggling in the region. The department continues to be committed to enforcing environmental law and protecting the natural resources of the region from illegal exploitation.
