MAJULI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently appreciated the transformation of 31 former rebels from Kargil Chapori in Majuli, who have embraced agriculture after a past life of armed struggle. In a tweet, CM Sarma called them "rebels turned agripreneurs." He acknowledged that the effort put in by these people to cultivate 208 bighas of land had set a good example for the youth of the region.

The ex-militants narrated their personal experiences and how the years passed while working for the dream of an independent Assam. A former rebel stated, "We realized that true independence can only come through an agricultural revolution," thereby stressing the importance of sustainable livelihoods.

We accepted farming as inspired by the spiritual teaching of Shankardev and Madhavdev to save our people. According to another agripreneur, their journey together is the very important shift from conflict to constructive contribution.

This initiative, therefore, symbolizes a new chapter for the individuals involved, but it is also a ray of hope for others who may be looking to leave violence and find a path. This reflects that agriculture, if implemented in a sustainable manner, will definitely bring peace and development in Assam. Such ex-militants who have reformed themselves and brought development to the economy of Assam are also positive examples inspiring many others to find a brighter future through their commitment and persistence.
