KHERONI: The officials of the forest department of Assam have tightened the checking against illegal felling of timber in an attempt to protect the forest cover of the state. As a part of this same initiative, the forest department officials undertook an operation in the Kheroni forest area which comes under the West Karbi Anglong district of the state.
During this operation, the officials came across a gang involved in the illegal felling of trees in the forest region on Monday night. The team had to chase down the vehicle as they tried to flee from the forest guards. They were finally able to apprehend the vehicle but the driver and helper of the vehicle were able to flee into the forest. The market value of the seized timber is said to be around Rs 70000 to 80000. Meanwhile, the team was able to seize a Tata pickup truck bearing registration number AS 02 BC 8473 with the confiscated timber on it.
Previously the 6th Bn. SSB based on specific input detected a Bhutanese truck bearing No. BP 3A/ 0009 loaded with 800 CFT of swan timber along with the driver of the truck. The special operation was carried by the D Coy Dadgiri. They seized the truck and timber besides apprehending the driver. On asking to produce valid and legal documents of timber and vehicle, the driver of the vehicle failed to produce any documents of the items being transported.
The special Naka team was laid by the command of Sanjeev Kumar, Deputy Comdt. Along with party of SOs-01 and others-08, the operation was executed successfully. The SSB apprehended one Nripen Narzary (50 years) of Phulbari village of the border area of Chirang district. They also seized one Bhutanese truck bearing number BP 3A/0009 loaded with swan timber worth a value of Rs. 50,00000 approx. The seized items and the apprehended person have been handed over to the Forest Range officer at Runikhata.
