SIVASAGAR: With the purpose of welcoming and orienting the newly-admitted students of the college, a Freshers’ Social-cum-Induction Programme was organized under the aegis of Gargaon College Students’ Union on Saturday.
The programme was inaugurated by Biman Baruah, president of the governing body of the college. The Principal of the college and noted academician and columnist, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, in his welcome address, called upon the students to not only devote themselves to academics but also emphasized the need to inculcate true human values and strengthen human relations. Further, pointing towards the fact that the new batch of students shall be the first batch under the Four Year Under Graduate Programme (FYUGP) introduced as part of NEP 2020, he explained the changes and challenges therein.
Dr Punyadhar Gogoi, former Principal of Gargaon College, graced the programme as the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Gogoi reminisced his long association with the college and cited the examples of several exemplary contributions of teachers and alumni of the college as role models for students. Moreover, he urged upon the students to focus on moulding their careers and grow into well rounded personalities by making judicious use of time.
The Vice Principal of the college, Dr Rina Handique, advisor of Gargaon College Students’ Union and Head of the Department of Political Science, Dr Pobon Kumar Gogoi, former president of Gargaon College Students’ Union, Kaustav Chetia, teaching and non teaching staff and students were also present on the occasion. The cultural programme was marked by the spectacular performances of students consisting of group dances, songs etc. as well as performances by invited artistes.
