BOKAKHAT: Residents of Nikori and Dhansiri Temera villages in Mohura Mouza of Bokakhat subdivision expressed deep concern over the absence of permanent preventive measures against erosion caused by the Gelabil River. It is noteworthy that the river has been eroding parts of these two villages for years, rendering many people homeless and landless.
Due to the erosion, a middle English school and a primary school had to be relocated. Several parts of the road leading to the Dicai Gaon Panchayat office, which runs along the Gelabil River, have also been washed away.
Despite continuous demands from the residents and consistent media coverage, the only preventive measure taken has been the installation of porcupine structures using concrete poles. However, this has not been reassuring for the riverbank communities. With the strong current of the Gelabil River, the villagers can no longer rely on the porcupine structures alone.
The villagers have been appealing to the government for years to implement permanent anti-erosion measures in the affected area. However, the lack of attention from the authorities has remained an unresolved question for everyone. As the monsoon season approaches, the people living along the riverbanks are growing increasingly worried.
Residents are questioning when the government will implement geo-bag methods to curb the erosion of the Gelabil River at Nikori and Dhansiri Temera. With erosion already beginning in these two villages during the pre-monsoon period, the situation could become severe. The riverbank residents urged the government to take immediate and effective action in this regard.
