GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has launched a three-month-long initiative called "Guwahati Swachhta Abhiyan," which commenced on Saturday. This campaign aims to enhance the cleanliness standards across the city and is part of the broader Swachh Survekshan 2024, a nationwide assessment program focused on urban sanitation.
The campaign was inaugurated on Saturday by State Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah and will run until March 15.
To ensure the successful execution of the "Guwahati Swachhta Abhiyan," the Guwahati Municipal Corporation has established 37 task forces. Each team, comprising eight sanitation workers and led by a captain and vice-captain, will conduct systematic cleanliness drives across all 60 wards under the GMC's jurisdiction over the next three months.
At the launch, Baruah highlighted that the teams would concentrate on comprehensive city cleaning while promoting resident participation. He stated, "Since the launch of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the majority of people have become aware of maintaining public cleanliness. However, due to an insignificant portion, it has still been a challenge to maintain cleanliness. This Swachhta Abhiyan will target those people to make them aware of ensuring cleanliness. Every citizen has to play their part in maintaining a hygienic condition in the city."
The minister proposed introducing reward schemes for residents actively contributing to local cleanliness. He remarked, "GMC has decided to give certificates to localities for maintaining cleanliness. Along with that, if the corporation can monitor the localities monthly and devise plans to provide rebates on taxes and other services, they will greatly help the corporation in maintaining cleanliness in the city."
