GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the creation of sub-districts throughout the state to strengthen smaller administrative units, aiming to enhance public service delivery and effectively address local concerns.
In a post on X, the Assam CM clarified that the sub-district initiative is a key part of the state government’s larger efforts to decentralize administrative functions and improve governance.
“Together with other interventions, our government is committed to ensuring good governance through our actions,” CM Sarma said.
This initiative aligns with the launch of #GoodGovernanceWeek2024, which highlights people-centric government initiatives. The theme for this year, “Prashasan Gaon ki Ore,” focuses on enhancing service delivery in rural areas and is being celebrated in honor of the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Meanwhile, 39 sub-districts in 21 districts of the state became functional from October 4. The aim was that people will no longer have to visit the DC office for all government work. Their work can be sorted out at the level of the sub-district office. Creating a sub-district office is an essential component of making districts the fulcrum of administration.
According to official sources, the idea behind the formation of sub-districts is the decentralization of administration, improving efficiency, and driving grassroots development by bringing governance closer to the people. Sub-district offices will be operational and equipped to handle a wide range of administrative tasks.
