GUWAHATI: In a bid to honour the valuable contributions of international archery champion Sanjay Boro and international boxing champion Jamuna Boro in bringing fame for Assam, the state government has taken the decision to induct both of them in the excise department as inspectors.
Minister for water resources and spokesperson of the government Pijush Hazarika revealed about this on Wednesday. Talking to media persons in Guwahati on Wednesday, Hazarika said the Assam cabinet has decided to appoint both international boxing champion Jamuna Boro and international archery champion Sanjay Boro as excise inspectors. Their appointment letters will be provided to them on September 3, on the birthday of Arjun awardee Bhogeshwar Baruah, the minister said while interacting with media persons.
Apart from inducting the two champions in the excise department, the state government has come up with the decision to rename Rajiv Gandhi National Park as Orang National Park. About this, minister Hazarika said the state government has taken the decision of renaming the Rajiv Gandhi National Park as Orang National Park taking the long-pending demands of the Adivasi and tea communities into consideration.
Rajiv Gandhi National Park, which is also a tiger reserve, is located on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra in Darrang and Sonitpur districts and is spread over an area of around 79.28 square kilometres. It is known for wild animals like Royal Bengal Tiger, Pygmy hog, Indian Rhinos and wild elephants. It got the recognition of a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1985 and of a national park in 1999.
Besides Rajiv Gandhi National Park, Assam has a number of national parks including Kaziranga, Manas, Dibru-Saikhowa, Nameri, Dihing-Patkai and Raimona national parks.
