Guwahati: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam has been appointed as the Single Nodal Agency (SNA) for the implementation of the National Cyber Crime Helpline Number scheme in the state. Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria issued an order designating CID as the SNA and assigning the responsibility of the scheme's implementation to the Superintendent of Police, Cyber Crime-II, CID, Assam, who will also serve as the Nodal Officer for the helpline number.
The order highlights that the CID will be responsible for implementing the Scheme for National Cyber Crime Helpline Number 1930 in the state of Assam. The Superintendent of Police, Cyber Crime-II, CID, Assam, has been appointed as the Nodal Officer and entrusted with the operation of the SNA Account for the utilization of funds.
“The Governor of Assam is pleased to designate Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Assam as Single Nodal Agency (SNA) for implementation of the Scheme for National Cyber Crime Helpline Number 1930 in the State of Assam,” the order reads.
“Superintendent of Police, Cyber Crime-II, CID, Assam is declared as the Nodal Officer for implementation of the Scheme for National Cyber Crime Helpline Number 1930 in the State of Assam and to operate SNA Account for utilization of fund,” it added.
In recent developments, the CID of Assam successfully froze Rs. 8,15,743 which was stolen by cyber fraudsters. One case involved an individual named Tapas Gupta, who reported to the helpline number 1930 that he received an email promising rewards. Unfortunately, upon opening the link provided in the email, Rs. 37,469 was illicitly withdrawn from his State Bank of India (SBI) account. However, the CID promptly intervened, traced the amount, and froze it, mitigating the losses.
In a separate incident, cyber criminals siphoned off Rs. 7,78,274 from the bank account of Mehboob Hasan Ahmed, who was lured with the promise of an online job. The CID swiftly tracked the entire amount and froze it, preventing further harm.
In light of these events, the CID has urged people to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to cyber crimes. They specifically cautioned against sharing sensitive information such as OTP (One-Time Passwords), CVV (Card Verification Value), PINs, or passwords with strangers. Furthermore, they advised against clicking on unknown links received through email, SMS, or WhatsApp to prevent potential risks.
With the CID being designated as the SNA for the National Cyber Crime Helpline Number in Assam, it signifies the state's commitment to combatting cyber crimes effectively. The establishment of the helpline aims to provide immediate assistance and support to individuals facing cyber threats, thereby bolstering the state's cybersecurity infrastructure.
