GUWAHATI: In a significant development, Tasdiqur Rahman, the son of IAS officer Atika Sultana, has been apprehended by the police in Guwahati as part of a major operation targeting cyber criminals. Rahman, one of the prime accused in this high-profile case, had been evading law enforcement for over a month and a half after his involvement was first revealed in September.
Rahman's association with an international network of cyber criminals involved in defrauding citizens prompted the launch of a relentless pursuit. He had managed to elude capture when the crackdown on cyber criminals intensified, even as the crime branch seized several vehicles linked to him in previous raids. Currently, Tasdiqur Rahman is in the custody of the Crime Branch.
The arrest took place in his flat, located in Islambasti near the Gandhibasti area of Guwahati, after he had been residing outside the state during his period of hiding.
Notably, a significant operation against international cyber criminals unfolded in Guwahati city earlier, resulting in the detention of 144 male and 47 female employees in the gang during September.
Guwahati Commissioner of Police, Diganta Barah, commented on this development, stating, "We received information about fake call centers operating in Guwahati for the past two years. These call centers operate at night and have no activity during the day. Since we lacked specific location details, we initiated our investigation and identified the masterminds behind the operation."
He also disclosed that they had obtained lists of the call centers and their operating bases. "Our information indicates that more than 50 call centers in the city are involved in duping gullible Indian and foreign nationals, siphoning off their hard-earned money. To tackle this issue, we identified eight locations in the city where these call centers are operating and targeted them. Simultaneous raids were conducted with teams of over 15 police personnel, each led by a senior officer, covering multiple locations, including residences, buildings, and malls," he added.
The arrest of Tasdiqur Rahman signifies a significant breakthrough in the fight against cyber crime in Guwahati. The operation, which initially began as an investigation into fake call centers, has grown into a comprehensive effort to dismantle an international cyber criminal network responsible for defrauding numerous individuals, both in India and abroad.
The diligent work of law enforcement agencies, including the Guwahati Police, has resulted in the apprehension of a prime suspect and the dismantling of several illicit operations. This development marks a substantial step toward improving the security and safety of citizens in the digital age.
