TINSUKIA: The International Human Rights Council (IHRC) Tinsukia district committee has appealed to Paresh Baruah, ULFA (I) C-in-C, for unconditional release of Prakash Chetri (23 years) on humanitarian grounds. Chetri was allegedly abducted by ULFA (I) militants at gun point from Jagun in Tinsukia district close to the Assam-Arunachal border on December 18, 2024.
Though the ULFA did not claim responsibility for the abduction, police sources later confirmed its involvement. Chetri, father of a year-old son, was a supervisor in a stone crusher factory. The General Secretary of IHRC Tinsukia District L Ratan Singh, while making an open appeal to Paresh Baruah, has unequivocally stated that any act of abduction is unacceptable and constitutes a direct violation of human rights. If ULFA (Independent) has any war-related issues, they must seek resolution through dialogue with the Government of India, as demanded by the council and to put an immediate end to inhumane acts like abduction, said Singh.
