BOKAKHAT: At the expansion project of the Numaligarh Oil Refinery, yesterday local people along with various party organizations staged a vehement protest. Demanding that local residents be recruited on the basis of eligibility, several party organizations joined forces with the local ‘Baiz’ and demonstrated their dissent.

In front of the gate of the NRL expansion project at Dabidubi, groups including Achu, Atachu, Atacha, the Workers’ Association, the Contractors’ Association, and the local Baiz gathered and protested loudly with various slogans. It is noteworthy that in the expansion project of the Numaligarh Oil Refinery, recruitment has already been given to residents from other districts.

Two days ago, as soon as a youth from another district joined the project and arrived at the Dabidubi work site, the local Baiz became aware of the matter. This prompted the local people, in collaboration with the party organizations, to take protest actions. From the protest site, both the local people and the party organizations demanded that, instead of recruiting people from other districts, local residents should be hired. The protesters chanted slogans such as ‘NRL authorities, be alert,’ ‘Provide 100 percent recruitment to local residents,’ and ‘We will stand firm but will not accept the exclusion of locals.’ In cooperation with the party organizations, the locals have also formed the Dabidubi Development Committee and resolved to fight for their rightful share.

They have warned that if the authorities of the Numaligarh Oil Refinery do not take their demands seriously, there will be continuous protests in the coming days.
