NAGAON: The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed at Nagaon on Thursday. On occasion of the day, an awareness programme was organized by District Social Welfare Department and District Legal Services Authority, Nagaon in association with Gram Vikas Parishad, Nagaon.
Devashish Sarma, IAS, District Commissioner, Nagaon inaugurated the programme. While addressing the occasion, Devashish Sarma, emphasized strategies to combat drug abuse among youth and highlighted the detrimental effects of drug use. The programme was attended by Debahuti Bora, Addl District Commissioner (I/C WCD), Nagaon, representative from DLSA, Nagaon, representative from District Sports Officer, and Sirajuddin Ahmed, Chief Advisor, Gram Vikas Parishad, Nagaon.
The programme also saw the felicitation of two former drug users, who are now actively involved in drug awareness campaigns. A short film on drug abuse was screened for the inmates of the district drug de-addiction center in Nagaon.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Bholanath Pegu, District Social Welfare Officer, Nagaon. Over three hundred students as well as other individuals from various institutions participated in the programme.
GOALPARA: On the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a significant awareness programme was organized on Thursday under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan at Goalpara College.
With a view to educate and mobilize the youth and community members against the menace of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, about five hundred people were trained on the occasion. The event was graced by several esteemed dignitaries, with Nabajit Pathak, ADC, attending as the chief guest.
The programme was further enriched by the presence of Dr Subhash Barman, Principal, Goalpara College, Nikha Moni Kalita, Assistant Commissioner, Dipankar Dekaraja, DSP, Dr Gyanjyoti Basumatary from the office of the Joint Director of Health Services, Abu Mostafa Arsad Hussain, District Social Welfare Officer, Dibakar Adhikary, Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel, DLSA, and Sanjay Hazarika, Chairman, Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA).
In addition to the dignitaries, the programme saw enthusiastic participation from students of Goalpara College, NSS, and NCC volunteers and coordinators, Child Development Project Officer, supervisors, and Anganwadi workers (AWWs).
The day commenced with a rally starting from Goalpara College campus, where participants carried placards, banners, and shouted slogans promoting a drug-free life. A pledge was also taken by the attendees to stay away from drugs and to actively spread awareness in their communities. All the speakers delivered powerful messages on the psychological, social, and legal consequences of drug addiction and emphasized the role of education and awareness in prevention.
