GUWAHATI: The Press Club of Assam (PCA) has expressed grief at the death of a 25-year-old video journalist at Samaguri in the Nagaon district of the state and sought a probe into the incident.

A thorough investigation was demanded by the PCA into the sudden and doubtful death of journalist Dhanti Hira after being involved in a road accident on the night of July 16.

Dhanti worked for a city-based satellite news channel and was on his way home to Samaguri with two of his friends on a bike when he accidently hit two youths at Khatowal.

Following the accident, the situation seemingly escalated into a hot argument between the two parties. However, Dhanti’s two friends fled from the scene following the argument and it is not clear what happened next.

Dhanti was injured in the melee and some local people took Dhanti to a nearby hospital, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

On being informed, Nagaon police personnel reached the area and recovered the bike from the accident site.

Dhanti’s family members leveled the allegation that a group of people was involved in the attack on Dhanti at the spot of the accident and he subsequently died as a result of that. They demand a detailed probe into the incident leading to the death of the young journalist.

Office- bearers of PCA also appealed to the two friends accompanying Dhanti to step forward and furnish the police with details about the incident so that the truth can be uncovered.

“The two fleeing friends should come forward, helping the investigating police officers to unearth the entire episode that led to Dhanti’s tragic death,” said PCA president Kailash Sarma, working president Nava Thakuria and general secretary Hiren Ch Kalita.

They also urged the management of the news channel where he worked to provide adequate support to the bereaved family at their time of sorrow and grief.

Earlier on April 12, a journalist died in a road accident in the Beltola area of Guwahati.

The deceased was subsequently identified as Mustaq Alam, a journalist working at a local media house in Guwahati. Alam was riding his scooty when he was hit from behind by a bus bearing registration number AS 01 HC 2629, which allegedly tried to overtake Alam and hit him in the process, according to eye witnesses. He succumbed to his injuries.
