Assam: KAAC Launches ₹4.24 Crore Silk Samagra-2 Project in Karbi Anglong

The project costs Rs 4,24,74,674, with a 90% share from the central government and a 10% share from the beneficiaries themselves.

KARBI ANGLONG: The Silk Samagra-2 project, which aims to expand the eri silk industry in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong for 2024–2025, was ceremonially launched by Kache Rongpipi, Executive Member in-charge of the Sericulture Department of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC). The launch was held at the Collective Mulberry Garden (CMG) in Bithiphang on Monday.

The project costs Rs 4,24,74,674, with a 90% share from the central government and a 10% share from the beneficiaries themselves. The project, implemented by the Department of Sericulture, KAAC, and sponsored by the Central Silk Board, Bengaluru, will benefit 340 beneficiaries across nine development blocks: Lumbajong, Bokajan, Nilip, Langsomepi, Howraghat, Rongkhang, Chinthong, Rongmongve, and Samelangso.

During the event, the executive member distributed cheques of Rs 9,382 as the first instalment to each beneficiary and provided nursery seedlings of kesseru plants, which serve as food plants for eri silk worms. In her speech, EM Rongpipi stated that Silk Samagra-2 aims to promote the eri industry by encouraging rearers to take up eri silkworm rearing, producing and selling eri silk cocoons and yarns.

The programme was attended by Member of the Autonomous Council (MAC) Kadom Terangpi; Sericulture Development Board Chairperson Roshmi Teronpi; OSD of the Sericulture Department, Mohon Barman; and Superintendent of Sericulture, Jaghat Rabha.
