KOKRAJHAR: Kokrajhar Cancer Centre, a unit of Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF), celebrated the World Cancer Day on Tuesday to create awareness among the public on prevention and early detection of cancer, through screening with a personalized approach.
The celebration started with a bike rally by ‘Gangjema Gateway Motor Cycle Club’ starting from Kokrajhar RN Brahma Civil Hospital in the morning to create public awareness and concluded at Salakati State Dispensary complex with a brief stopover at the Kokrajhar Cancer Centre. Another rally was also conducted by ASHA workers of the Salakati area with the same message.
A public meeting was held in the Salakati State Dispensary complex on the importance of the day and to carry forward the message of early detection through screening and cancer prevention based on a healthy lifestyle.
Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, ADC (Health) Kokrajhar Kabita Deka emphasized the importance of community engagement for awareness and screening for cancer and encouraged everyone to take advantage of the Ayushman Card.
D Mahanta, DSP, Kokrajhar, spoke about the danger of tobacco related diseases and the alarming rate of addiction. He also urged everyone to abstain from tobacco related addiction and sensitize the general population also on the harmful effects of tobacco and thus to promote a healthier community.
During the meeting, Medical Superintendent of Kokrajhar Cancer Centre Dr N K Singha informed about the facilities at the centre and also highlighted the importance of screening for cancer for an early diagnosis and its prevention. He also informed the public regarding the ‘Mission One crore Mega Cancer Screening programme’ in 35 districts of Assam, which was launched by Chief Minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 1. This screening will be executed by the ACCF and thus is expected to create a great impact on early diagnosis, he added.
Dr Wasim Bari, District Coordinator, ACCF of Kokrajhar, also spoke on the prevention of cancer, ill effects of tobacco and the ongoing community screening in the district. During the session, Madhurjya Lahkar, DGM, HR (Corporate Communication, NTPC, Salakati), spoke about the support provided by them to ACCF, in the screening programme of the Kokrajhar district and to carry forward the same in future also.
A cancer survivor of the area also spoke about his experience with the disease, the care and compassion that was provided by Kokrajhar Cancer Centre for which he was grateful to ACCF and the Ayushman Card.
District Programme Manager (DPM), Kokrajhar Sanathan Iswary also spoke about the significance of the World Cancer Day 2025 and the coordination and support provided by District Health Authority in this mission. Also present on the dais were Medical Officer of Salakati PHC Dr Farid Khan, Aduity Thakuri, Executive, CSR, NTPC, Salakati and President, Salakati Hospital Management Committee Mahant Basumatary to encourage the entire team of this programme. The meeting was well-attended by the local public, health care and ASHA workers, and people from various walks of life.
