KOKRAJHAR: For the first time in Kokrajhar, the ‘Eat Right Mela’ organized by the Food Safety Department, Kokrajhar, under the Commissionerate of Food Safety, Assam, in collaboration with the Kokrajhar District Administration for healthy eating habit got underway from today at Kokrajhar Government HS & MP School Playground.
As part of the programme, District Commissioner, Kokrajhar Masanda M Pertin flagged off the walkathon of the students, NCC cadets, and citizens of Kokrajhar in the morning followed by an inaugural meeting and exhibition highlighting the importance of millet-based food products and its benefits for the people.
Designated Officer of Food Safety Department, Kokrajhar Bilifang Brahma, in his keynote address, said that Kokrajhar was one of the districts of Assam to host the ‘Eat Right Mela’ in connection with the observation of international millet year to raise awareness about the importance of millets, their nutritional benefits, and their potential to address food security and climate change. He said that millet was a fast growing food across the world for its rich nutritional and other disease preventive supplements. Millets protect the people from diabetes, cancer, and other diseases and its demand is going high everywhere, he said, adding that the habit of eating nutrition-rich millets should be a regular practice for all. With the aim of bringing awareness, the department concerned, in collaboration with the district administration, organized the ‘Eat Right Mela’ in Kokrajhar. He also said that there was also an exhibition displaying millet-based food products for healthy life in 30 stalls.
Brahma said that the holding of the mela was an initiative of FSSAI and aimed to promote healthy eating habits, food safety awareness, and sustainable nutritional practices. He said that there also were technical sessions featuring local food products especially millet-based products and demonstrations of food adulteration testing. Besides, the programme also included quiz competition and millet-based cooking competition.
The inaugural programme was addressed by Chairperson of Kokrajhar Municipal Board Pratibha Brahma, Samiran Baruah, Retired Designated Officer, Food Safety, Assam, Dr Sunil Paul, Chief Scientist, KVK, Gossaigaon, Dr Anuk Islary, Assistant Prof CIT-Kokrajhar and attended by Joint Director of Health Services, Kokrajhar and Dilip Chetia, Secretary, Kokrajhar Merchant Association.
