Assam: LGBRIMH Tezpur Holds Awareness Program on World Schizophrenia Day

Tezpur: On the occasion of World Schizophrenia Day, the Department of Psychiatry at Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH), Tezpur, organized a special awareness programme for patients and their attendants in the OPD waiting area of the hospital premises.

The initiative is aimed to raise awareness about schizophrenia, dispel common myths associated with the illness, and promote early intervention and treatment. The session began with an interactive discussion led by experts from the Department of Psychiatry, where myths and facts surrounding schizophrenia were clarified. The team addressed widespread misconceptions that often prevent timely medical attention and increase stigma.

The event also included a question-and-answer session, providing patients and caregivers the opportunity to directly engage with mental health professionals, clarify doubts, and gain a better understanding of the illness and its management.

The programme was graced by Dr. K. Pathak, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, along with consultants, senior residents, and junior residents Dr Mansi Anand, Dr Bijayta Borah, Dr Saptarshi Paul Choudhury and Dr Irfan from the department. They emphasized the importance of recognizing early symptoms such as social withdrawal, changes in behaviour, and unusual beliefs or perceptions.

Through this outreach, attendees were encouraged to seek timely psychiatric support and were reassured about the availability of effective treatment options. The hospital reiterated its commitment to community mental health and to breaking the stigma often attached to psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia.

The programme concluded with a message of hope and support, encouraging regular follow-ups and community participation in mental health awareness efforts, stated a press release.
