NAGAON: In a joint operation conducted by the Eastern Wildlife Division, Nagaon Territorial Division, and Nagaon police, a significant haul of tiger claws, canines, bones, and an elephant tusk was seized in the Kathiatoli area of Assam's Nagaon on Wednesday afternoon.
Three smugglers involved in the illegal trade of animal parts were arrested during the operation. The arrested individuals have been identified as Amar Hunsey from Karbi Anglong, Mahendra Borgang from Nagaon, and Pravin Sangma from Karbi Anglong.
Meanwhile, cattle smuggling from Assam to Bangladesh through Meghalaya continues despite raids by authorities. Smugglers use routes like NEC Road, passing through Jirang, Mairang, and the West Khasi Hills to reach the Bangladesh border.
Large trucks, carrying between 100 and 300 cattle, often pass through Assam’s Boko, Chhaygaon, and Palasbari before entering Meghalaya. The cattle are transported in small vans from Chhaygaon to Kulshi and Borduar, then further moved to various locations within Meghalaya.
Once in Meghalaya, the cattle are offloaded from the smaller vans and loaded onto larger trucks. They are tied up, and their mouths are stuffed with plastic to keep them quiet.
These operations involve large syndicates that bring cattle from South Kamrup, Barpeta, and surrounding areas. The animals are moved through various villages and towns, eventually reaching their destination after several days.
