DIBRUGARH: A man in Khowang who began farming in spite of his physical limitations after suffering a leg injury in an accident has become an inspiration. Karnajit Borah, who lived in Kotoky Pukhuri in the Dibrugarh district of Khowang, lost his left leg during an accident back in 2013.

Previously providing for his family through different business endeavours, Borah found himself unexpectedly unable to do so.

With crutches in his hands, Borah continued to cultivate his 12 bigha (7.44 acre) of land without losing courage. He has been doing this for the past 15 years.

Locals have been motivated to pursue agriculture by drawing inspiration from his perseverance and resolve in providing for his family, which includes his wife and school-going daughter, in the face of stiff challenges. Borah says, “When I am doing it (farming), the rest can also do it. It is good.”

Borah uses his land near the Burhi Dihing river embankment to grow two crop cycles annually despite the lack of practical irrigation systems. He currently grows black grammes, mustard, bottle gourd, pumpkin, and other rabi crops after harvesting paddy. In addition to providing for his family by working in the field with just one leg, Borah uses his harvests to fund his daughter's education.

Devoid of government programs for farmers, Karnajit Borah, popularly known as Akan, continues his fight. Social media users and the local villagers have taken notice of his inspirational tale of unwavering willpower.
