Assam: Man Sentenced to Life for Murdering a Friend in Udalguri

The convict allegedly hacked one Illiam Kujur to death with a wood plank. The convict and the deceased were both friends.

ASSAM: A man in Udalguri, Assam, was sentenced to lifetime imprisonment for a murder he committed in 2017.

The district and session judge, N. Senabaya Deori, pronounced the verdict convicting Lurkho Munda to harsh imprisonment for life and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 for the offence under Section 302 of the IPC.

The convict allegedly hacked one Illiam Kujur to death with a wood plank. The convict and the deceased were both friends.

The relative of the deceased later lodged an FIR with Dimakuchi police, narrating the incident. After a thorough investigation, the police registered the case under Dimakuchi PS case no. 94/2017 under section 302 of IPC and arrested Munda.

After a trial, the court convicted Munda to life. The court further directed the District Legal Service Authority to grant compensation of rupees five lakhs to the next of kin of the victim under section 357 of CrPC/395 of BNSS of the victim compensation scheme.

In a similar incident, a court in Udalguri sentenced five people to life imprisonment earlier in June for the 2017 murder of Sahid Jamal in Kalaigaon.

District and Sessions Judge N. Senabaya Deori pronounced the verdict on June 20, convicting Tomser Ali, Md. Lal Miah, Md. Aibar Ali, Badsa Mondal, and Gajibur Rahman. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on each convict under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for murder.
