Assam: Massive Cultural Rally On the Occasion of Karam Puja

Representatives of several tea tribe sub-communities as well as linguistic communities took part in the cultural presentations.

BISWANATH: A massive cultural rally was organised on the occasion of the central Karam Puja celebration Biswanath on Sunday.

Elephants were also part of this massive celebration as a large number of performers played the traditional musical instrument Madal and an even larger number of participants danced the Jhumur dance to the beat of the instruments.

The North Assam Tea Tribes Art and Culture Development Centre organised the central celebration of the festival in Biswanath and the colourful rally was a part of the celebration. More than 50 cultural troops from across the state participated in this event. The rally was flagged off by the Minister and Member of the Legislative Assembly representing Tezpur, Pallab Lochan Das. The MLA from Biswanath, Promod Borthakur also attended this event.

The rally was flagged off from the Kamalakanta Khetra in Biswanath and went around the Biswanath town to return back to the starting point at the culmination of the rally.

It can be noted that 5 thousand artists performed the Jhumur dance as a part of the event and the beats of the Madal made the people dance to their tunes. The Karam Puja celebrations were started on October 3 and it came to an end on Sunday.

Karam Puja, one of the prime festivals of the Adivasi community, was observed at Tupia. The Puja, convened by All Assam Bhumij Samaj in collaboration with the Gorhpur, Behali, Biswanath, and Naduar regional committees of the Samaj, was inaugurated by Sootea MLA Padma Hazarika. At the very outset of the programme, meritorious students were accorded a warm felicitation by the organizer. Addressing the gathering, MLA Hazarika traced the origin of the Karam Puja and made a humble appeal to all concerned to work unitedly for the all-round development of the community. Later on, the artists from the Bhumij community performed the Jhumur dance. The puja was also attended by Budheswar Bhumij, Rajesh Bhumij, Jahar Bhumij, and Keshab Bhumij, among other leaders of the locality.
