Nagaon: The police arrested three individuals including two medical students on charges of theft in the Nagaon district of Assam.
According to the officer-in-charge of Nagaon Sadar Police Station, Debajit Das, the three arrested individuals had stolen seven computers from Nagaon Medical College and Hospital on Friday.
Two of the accused are students at the same college, pursuing MBBS while the other is a driver who is previously known to be involved in a car-lifting gang in Nagaon.
The OC further informed that the accused were produced before a local court a day after the case was registered on Friday. The three individuals are now in judicial custody.
In a separate incident, an Assam Police constable, Bidyut Das, sustained serious injuries in a machete attack by a group of miscreants in Yajang C village, Nagaland’s Mokokchung district, on Tuesday night.
Das was part of a 17-member team from Teok Police Station, Jorhat, investigating a motorcycle theft racket across the interstate border. According to Jorhat SP Shwetank Mishra, the team encountered a hostile group of 25-30 individuals during the investigation. The situation escalated when Das was attacked from behind, suffering a severe head injury.
The group surrounded the police team, wielding machetes and other weapons, trapping them in the village. A rescue operation, led by Jorhat Additional SP Luna Sonowal, and coordinated with Mokokchung SP Vesupra Kezo, ensured the safe evacuation of the officers by 5 a.m.
Das, suffering a skull fracture and brain injuries, was transferred to a Dibrugarh hospital and is scheduled for surgery. One suspect has been apprehended for questioning.
