DIPHU: A memorandum was submitted to Karbi Anglong District Commissioner Nirola Phangchopi by the Karbi Students Association (KSA-Samson Teron, Karbi Students and Youth Council (KSYC) and allied organization highlighting the operations of illegal coal mining and transportation taking place in the region.

Unlawful activities such as unauthorized coal mining, unregulated stone extraction and their transportation progressing at an alarming rate was included in the memorandum.

Such activities, if remained unchecked, would result in adverse consequences such as ecological imbalance, threat to local livelihood and degradation of the environment.

The governance and accountability of the district administration were also questioned in the memorandum. Large scale stone extraction have resulted in the loosening of the soil and a reduction in the productivity of agriculture. In addition, the natural habitats have been destroyed which have had ill-effects on the biodiversity.

Unrestrained exploitation has deteriorated common lands, impacting traditional livelihoods, and local farmers and indigenous populations have been denied their legitimate access to natural resources.

The message emphasised how these unlawful activities jeopardise the legal and environmental frameworks put in place by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and the government.
