Assam: Minister Pabitra Margherita Unveils Rs 50 Crore Joymoti Memorial Complex in Sivasagar

The Rs 50 crore Joymoti Memorial Complex in Maduri, Sivasagar, was inaugurated by Minister Pabitra Margherita to honor Ahom princess Joymoti Konwari and celebrate Assam’s cultural heritage.

SIVASAGAR: The long-anticipated Mohiyoshi Joymoti Memorial Complex (MJMC) took a significant step toward realization as Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, ceremonially laid the foundation pillar at Maduri, Sivasagar, on Sunday. 

The project, estimated at ₹50 crore, will span 15 bighas of land near Joymoti High School in Maduri, the birthplace of the legendary Ahom princess Joymoti Konwari. The Tai Ahom Development Council has already allocated ₹6.85 crore for the first phase of construction.

Pabitra Margherita underlined the cultural relevance of the project, pointing out that the sacrifice of Joymoti Konwari has relevance not only for the Ahom community but also to the larger historical context of Assam. The foundation-laying ceremony was done with traditional Ahom rituals and in the presence of dignitaries such as Mayur Borgohain, Chairman of the Tai Ahom Development Council, and Dayananda Borgohain, Vice Chairman of the Swargadeo Chaolung Siukapha Samannay Kshetra.

The memorial complex will include a museum, an auditorium, Tai language school, kalakshetra (cultural center), and a replica of the statue of Joymoti Konwari.

Additionally, a war memorial commemorating the Battle of Alaboi, where 10,000 Assamese soldiers perished fighting the Mughal army in 1669, will be established. 

The Mohiyoshi Joymoti Memorial Complex (MJMC) is being funded by the Directorate of Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes, Assam. The efforts of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government to showcase Assam’s cultural heritage on a global stage have received widespread appreciation.

Joymoti Konwari, known for her steadfast defiance against King Sulikpha’s forces, sacrificed her life to safeguard her husband, Prince Gadapani, a legacy that earned her the title ‘Mohiyoshi.'
