GUWAHATI: Akhil Gogoi, an MLA from Assam, was suspended from the Assam Legislative Assembly on Friday after he called for an investigation into the recent assault on Congress MP and former MLA Rakibul Hussain. The attack occurred on February 20 in Rupahihat, Nagaon, where masked assailants reportedly waved black flags before physically attacking Hussain and his bodyguard.

In a statement on social media following his suspension, Gogoi expressed his frustration, saying, “Again suspended from the Assam Legislative Assembly today for demanding an investigation into the incident of physical assault by masked men on parliamentarian and ex-MLA Rakibul Hussain.”

The incident has ignited significant political backlash, with opposition parties accusing the state government of neglecting the safety of public officials. Gogoi's suspension contributes to the mounting tensions in the Assembly, since he had also been suspended the day earlier for allegedly disrupting discussion on a water supply scheme in Guwahati.

The Assembly session was marked by chaos as Congress MLAs protested, storming the Well of the House and demanding an adjournment motion to address the attack on Hussain. Speaker Biswajit Daimary was compelled to adjourn the session twice within the first half-hour due to the uproar.

As political tensions escalate, the opposition continues to advocate for a comprehensive investigation and prompt action against those involved in the assault on Rakibul Hussain.
