Assam: More Than 300 Tea-Tribe Members Join Indian National Congress at Doomdooma

DOOMDOOMA: More than 300 people, mostly belonging to Tea-tribes community, joined the Indian National Congress (INC) today in the presence of Gaurav Gogoi, MP Jorhat and Deputy Leader of Congress Parliamentary Party, at Uruli, Rupaisiding.

The notable among them was Suresh Bhumij of Asam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and 30 other office-bearers of the party who expressed their allegiance to INC. The other newly inducted members were from BJP, former Congress deserters, and other political parties.

They were formally inducted by MP Gaurav Gogoi. The public meeting was attended by other organisations and individuals like Doomdooma Satadol Sakha Xahitya Xabha, Rupai Satadol Sakha Xahitya Xabha, Makum-Saikhowa (Sadiya) Ralpath Surakhya Samiti, and Doomdooma Press Club.

The meeting was anchored by Azad Hussain, General Secretary, Tinsukia District Committee, INC, and attended by former MLAs like Durga Bhumij, Dilip Moran, Raju Sahu, Tinsukia District Congress President Jayanta Kalita, Vice-President Dharmeswar Bora, President of Doomdooma Block Congress Committee Rajen Medi, and other leading District level and State level office-bearers. Besides honouring the party members, some distinguished persons like Bina Devi Bordoloi, Benu Bora, Biren Hazarika - all former Vice-Principals of Doomdooma College and other dignitaries present were felicitated in the meeting.

MP Gogoi, in his speech, said that people realised the false promises made to the beneficiaries by BJP and against BJP’s tall claim of development, the common people are living amid great hardship now. “So for all-round development of the country, so that the benefits trickle down to the grass root level, we now need a new economic policy,” he said.

Doomdooma Press Club delegation, lead by President Manoj Dutta and Makum-Saikhowa (Sadiya) Ralpath Surakhya Samiti Secretary and former DRUCC and ZRUCC member Dhiren Deka submitted two separate memoranda on the malfunctioning and mismanagement of the Makum-Dangri branch line of NF Railway along with a demand for extension of the broad gauge line up to Saikhowa for the convenience of the people of Sadiya Co-District and four districts of neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh. Earlier MP Gogoi was accorded a warm welcome at the Doomdooma Rajiv Bhaban by the party workers and was brought to the venue at Rupaisiding in a bike rally. In the beginning of the public meeting, former MLA Doomdooma Durga Bhumij welcomed the guests and after the induction ceremony, former AJP leader, who contested the last assembly election from Doomdooma constituency, expressed hope that the Doomdooma constituency, which was once a strong fortress of the Congress, would grow from strength to strength from now onwards in view of enthusiasm manifested in the faces of the people who assembled at the meeting.
