MORIGAON: In a significant breakthrough, Morigaon police have arrested ten cybercriminals in a district-wide crackdown aimed at curbing cybercrime.
The operation was led by Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Samiran Baishya, targeted areas including Moirabari,Laharighat, Bhuragaon, and Mayang.
According to police sources, the suspects are linked to a range of illegal activities, including online fraud and identity theft. The arrests are part of an ongoing investigation to dismantle an extensive network of cybercriminals operating in the region, with officials hinting that the number of arrests may increase as the probe continues.
The operation involved multiple police teams and is described as one of the district’s most extensive efforts against cybercrime. Authorities are currently interrogating the detained individuals to uncover details about their operations and potential accomplices.
The police have urged the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious online activities, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in combating cybercrime.
Meanwhile, earlier last month, the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) team from Hatigaon PS busted a cybercrime gang. Police arrested an individual named Ajmol Hussain (41) of Radhakuchi of Barpeta district from Bhetapara.
The police conducted a raid on his premises in Tetelia and recovered 12 ATM cards, six passbooks, two SIM cards, and 10 mobile handsets, suspected to be used for cyber fraud. The accused was also found to be involved in opening "mule bank accounts" that have been used for laundering money extorted by cybercriminals. Legal action has been initiated against the accused.
