GOLAGHAT: A two-day national level seminar started at the Department of Economics, Golaghat Devraj Roy College, from today.
A press statement of DR College Golaghat said that Deb Kumar Chakraborty, Dean of Dibrugarh University, and one of the leading economists of the state, participated as a speaker in the seminar on ‘Women Empowerment and Rural Development through use of Indigenous Technology’ and elaborated on the theme.
In his speech, Dr Chakraborty said, “Women play an important role in the development of society. Rural development can only be achieved by empowering women. While thinking of new ideas for rural development, equal efforts should be made to take women forward.” He gave examples of various national and international issues and urged the women community to engage in productive activities.
He also released the annual ‘News Letter’ of the Department of Economics of Golaghat Debraj Roy College. In the discussion held by Devashish Bhuyan and Madhusmita Gogoi, the chief guest of the Human Resource Department of Numaligarh Refinery Dr Kajal Saikia appreciated the initiative of Golaghat Debraj Roy College and assured full support to the programme on behalf of Numaligarh Refinery Authority. Dr Pranjal Pratim Borgohain, Professor, Department of Economics, Dibrugarh University, participated as one of the speakers and explained in detail how women empowerment took place in Bangladesh in the seventies by forming self-help groups under the leadership of Mohammad Yunis. He also analyzed the current state of the world.
Eminent educationist Dr Nripen Barua, Professor of Economics, Birangana Sati Sadhani State University, Dr Jitu Saikia, Professor of Sociology, Dr Partha Pratim Bora, Vice-Principal Gayatri Sharma Tamuli, Dr Jadumani Das, Head of the Department of Economics, and Dean of Arts Dr Debajit Phukan, among others, spoke on the occasion.
About 71 research papers from many states were read in the seminar. Golaghat District Commissioner Pulak Mahanta released the book titled ‘The Economy of Assam’ edited by Prof Dr Debajit Phukan, Prof Dr Sanjoy Saha, and Prof Dr Hemanta Saikia. The welcome address was delivered by the Principal of Devraj Roy College Dr Jayanta Barukial. About 30 research papers will be presented in the seminar.
