GUWAHATI: In a decisive win for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council elections in Assam ended with the alliance bagging 33 out of 36 seats.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the people of the council region for their resounding support and termed the results as "another saffron wave in Assam."
Taking to social media platform X, CM Sarma praised the voters for endorsing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s welfare policies, especially those aimed at indigenous communities. “Our heartfelt gratitude to the people of Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council for speaking in unison and endorsing Hon’ble Prime Minister’s Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s welfare policies, particularly for the indigenous communities. NDA has won 33/36 seats,” he wrote in a celebratory post.
The outcomes announced by the Assam State Election Commission reported an emphatic victory for the NDA. The BJP alone secured 6 seats, and the BJP's ally, the Rabha Hasong Jautho Sangraam Samiti, secured a remarkable 27 seats. Two Independent candidates got two seats, and Congress could only get one seat in the tribal council.
Among the most important wins, BJP candidates took seats in constituencies such as Kothakuthi, Agia, Bondapara, Bamunigaon, Silputa, and the unopposed Joyramkuchi seat. Significantly, Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tankeswar Rabha of the Rabha Hasong Jautho Sangraam Samiti won his No. 7 South Dudhnoi seat with 7,164 votes, beating Congress candidate Sanjib Kumar Rabha, who garnered a mere 1,593 votes.
BJP National President JP Nadda also put out a congratulations message to party workers and coalition partners. "This mandate gives expression to people's faith in the governance and vision of Hon. PM Narendra Modi Ji whose leadership has ushered in impactful change and progress throughout the state," Nadda said in a statement.
The Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council covers portions of Assam's Goalpara and Kamrup districts. Active voting was recorded, with more than 1.80 crore voters exercising their franchise. The electorate comprised 90.71 lakh male electors, 89.65 lakh female electors, and 408 electors belonging to other categories. Balloting was conducted at 25,007 polling stations.
These elections were a part of a larger democratic process that consisted of elections to Gaon Panchayat and Zilla Parishad seats, in which thousands of local representatives took part. The NDA has thus strengthened its grip in the region with this sweeping victory, and further entrenched its political foundation among Assam's rural and tribal electorate.
