SIVASAGAR: As Assam gears up to celebrate the centenary of the legendary musician and Bharat Ratna awardee Dr Bhupen Hazarika, concerns over the neglected condition of his full-sized statue in Moran’s Tiloighat area, situated beside National Highway 37, have sparked public outrage.
The All Assam Scheduled Caste Students’ Union (AASCSU) has strongly condemned the state of disrepair and disregard surrounding the memorial, demanding immediate government action.
A delegation from AASCSU, led by Central Committee secretary Mridul Das and District President Dipankar Das, visited the memorial site and expressed deep concern over the lack of maintenance since the statue’s installation several years ago. According to the delegation, the environment around the statue remains dilapidated and neglected, which they describe as a dishonour to the globally revered cultural icon.
Calling the state of the memorial disrespectful, not just to Dr Hazarika but to the entire Assamese community, the organization submitted a memorandum to Moran MLA Chakradhar Gogoi, demanding urgent beautification and protection of the site. They demanded construction of a solid boundary around the statue, development of a community hall, and creation of a public garden around the statue area.
In response, MLA Chakradhar Gogoi assured the delegation that an allocation of Rs. 12 lakh has already been made, and work on these development projects will begin immediately.
The AASCSU also extended heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma for his initiative to celebrate Bhupen Hazarika’s centenary through a series of cultural and commemorative programmes at both national and international levels.
