GUWAHATI: In a shocking incident, a notorious thief escaped from the Kokila Police Outpost in Assam’s Bongaigaon district, showing a serious lapse in police security. The thief identified as Monirul Islam was first arrested on January 15 for trying to steal in Kokila Second Block. A case was filed against him the following day, and he was sent to judicial custody.

Three days later, Monirul was brought back into police custody for further investigation, but despite being handcuffed, he managed to escape during the night, leaving police authorities embarrassed.

Monirul, who has a record of being involved in several thefts in the area, has made local residents fearful, as they have already been dealing with frequent thefts. His escape has caused anger and raised concerns about the security at the Kokila Police Outpost, especially under Officer Gopal Bora’s leadership.

Critics have pointed out mistakes in keeping the suspect secured and are calling for Officer Bora and others to be held responsible. Local people and community leaders want strong action and are asking higher authorities to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

This escape has not only exposed weaknesses in police procedures but has also heightened concerns about public safety in the area.

Meanwhile, an EGPD team from Basistha Police Station arrested two individuals, Rafiqul Islam (40) and Sanowar Hussain (20), in connection with a theft case at a workshop in Sawkuchi. The stolen machine was recovered from Anupam Path in Sijubari. Legal action has been initiated against the accused.
