DOOMDOOMA: The stretch of National Highway No. 37, which is now called Assam Trunk Road, from Makum to Rupaisiding, like before, is in a dilapidated condition for about a year, much to the inconvenience of the commuters and general public.
Although the aforesaid stretch was repaired hurriedly just before Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarmah’s visit for land patta distribution at Rupaisiding on February 23, 2024, the condition of the road again deteriorated from bad to worse.
What is more intriguing is that the condition remains unchanged even after the Chief Minister’s second visit to Tinsukia District in connection with the inauguration of solar powered street lights on Sudhakantha Bhupen Hazarika Setu, popularly known as Dholla-Sadiya Bridge, on September 5, 2024 as he reportedly declared the release of Rs 22 crore for the purpose.
The state government’s series of road safety measures in the recent past to create public awareness, therefore, turn out to be ludicrous in view of such prevailing road conditions. It poses not only hazards to those sick or to pregnant women but is also a denial of human rights.
It is learnt that of late an estimate has been sent to Central Reserve Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) by PWD (Roads), Tinsukia Division for administrative approval (AA). But then, the question arises on the delay in attending to matters of public safety and convenience at a time when both the state and central governments put so much importance on infrastructure development, especially in rural and interior areas.
