BISWANATH: The 100th cabinet meeting of the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led Assam government was conducted on Friday. This cabinet meeting took several key decisions including changes in several administrative units of the state. Biswanth was given back the status of a district during this cabinet meeting.

This decision brought happiness to the people of the Biswanath, which was previously a district, but the status was revoked by the state government on 31 December 2022 owing to the delimitation of constituencies in the state by the election commission. This new decision makes provisions for the creation of three Sub-Districts under the Biswanath district. These are the Biswanth, Bihali and Gohpur, and out of them is Biswanath the Sadar Sub-District and the rest are the non-sadar Sub-Districts.

It can be noted that Biswanath was initially declared a district on 15 August 2015 and this status was temporarily revoked on 31 December 2022 only to be reissued on 25 August 2023. People of the district started celebrating soon after the declaration was made public. The people came out to the streets to express their happiness and busted crackers.

Meanwhile, several organisations including All Assam Students Union, Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad and Karbi Students Union expressed their happiness over the granting of District status. They also demanded that the offices of all departments be set up in the district soon so that the public does not have to go to other places.

It is important to note that the Sootea municipality, which was previously under the Biswanath district of the state, will no longer remain under it.

The State Cabinet led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held its 100th meeting at the State Guest House at Kharghuli here today and took a slew of crucial administrative decisions, including the creation of 81 sub-districts and the recreation of four districts. The over-five-hour-long marathon Cabinet meeting also took several other crucial decisions, besides the Chief Minister placing the report card of the decisions of the past 99 cabinet meetings and their implementation.
