BARPETA: A police constable in Assam's Barpeta has been suspended following allegations of bribery. The suspended constable, identified as Sanjay Kalita, was serving at the Barpeta Sadar Police Station.
Kalita allegedly demanded money from a youth in Dangarkuchi, Barpeta, for not wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle, as per reports. A video showing the constable taking money went viral on social media, bringing the incident to light.
Barpeta Superintendent of Police (SP) Sushanta Biswa Sarma, taking swift action, initiated an inquiry into the matter. He issued an immediate suspension order against the constable after the investigation.
The incident has raised concerns about misconduct within the police force. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against any officer found guilty of corruption.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, a complaint was received at the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam, alleging that Nekibuz Zaman, junior engineer of the office of the Fakiragram Municipal Board, Kokrajhar, had demanded Rs. 15,000 as a bribe from the complainant in lieu of giving permission for renovation/construction works of a commercial building (shop) of the complainant.
Nekibuz Zaman was caught red-handed immediately after he accepted Rs. 10,000 as part of the demanded bribe from the complainant. The tainted bribe money was recovered from his possession and was seized accordingly in the presence of independent witnesses.
