DIBRUGARH: In a violent attack on Tuesday night, Assam Police constable Bidyut Das was injured after being assaulted by a group of miscreants in Yajang C village, located in Nagaland's Mokokchung district.
Constable Das, part of a 17-member police team from Teok Police Station in Jorhat, had crossed the interstate border to investigate a motorcycle theft racket.
Jorhat SP Shwetank Mishra confirmed that the police team was conducting their investigation when they encountered a hostile group of 25 to 30 individuals.
"While they were gathering information on the theft, the situation escalated rapidly. A machete attack from behind caused severe injuries to Constable Bidyut Das's head, according to Mishra.
The situation worsened as the assailants surrounded the police team, brandishing machetes and other weapons, preventing their exit from the village. "I immediately contacted SP Vesupra Kezo of Mokokchung district, who understood the urgency of the situation and intervened," Mishra added.
A coordinated effort saw a team of Assam Police, led by Jorhat Additional SP Luna Sonowal, sent to Yajang C village to rescue the trapped officers. The standoff was resolved by 5 a.m., allowing the police team to be safely evacuated. One suspect was apprehended and brought to Jorhat for questioning.
The injured constable, who suffered brain injuries from a skull fracture, was transferred to a private hospital in Dibrugarh. Doctors have confirmed that he is scheduled for surgery on Thursday morning.
