Guwahati: Continuing its crackdown into the cash-for-jobs scam for recruitment of Sub-Inspector (SIs) into the Assam Police, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam police on Saturday arrested two more suspects from Dibrugarh district. Both are linked to DIG (retd) PK Dutta, the prime accused in the case.

They arrested persons have been identified as Priyonath Gogoi alias Jintu Gogoi of Jibon Phukan Nagar and Dilip Gogoi alias Bhai of Borpathar area in Dibrugarh. Both the apprehendees have been taken to Guwahati by a CID team for interrogation.

According to reporters, the search for Dutta, who went absconding after the scam came to light, led the police to the Dibrugarh duo. According to a theory, Deka might be residing with his son-in-law, who lives across the border in Nepal.

On the other hand, Diban Deka, the other prime accused in the scam, is in the custody of the Crime Branch of Assam Police. Deka, a leader of the ruling BJP party, was arrested on Wednesday after an extensive manhunt was conducted to nab the absconding suspect.

Deka was arrested soon after he surrendered to the police at Pathacharkuchi in Barpeta district late on Wednesday night. Deka was produced at the Kamrup chief judicial magistrate court, which remanded him for five days in police custody.

Following Deka's arrest, he was also stripped of his BJP membership by the party's leadership. Deka had contested the 2011 Assembly polls in Assam on a BJP ticket.

It needs mention here that on September, 20, the examination to recruit unarmed sub-inspectors was canceled minutes after it began as the question paper had been leaked on social media. Assam Police's investigations in the immediate aftermath of the examination's cancellation have revealed a nexus of criminals involved in giving jobs in exchange for huge amounts of cash.

The written test for recruitment of 597 posts of Sub Inspector (Unarmed Branch) of Assam Police, which was cancelled on September 20, is now scheduled to be held on November 22, 2020.
