MUMBAI: The Crime Branch of Assam Police has sent a team to Mumbai to investigate several YouTubers accused of promoting obscenity. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that the Guwahati Police have filed cases against five individuals, including well-known YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, for their alleged involvement in inappropriate content.
Controversy broke out when Allahbadia made an inflammatory comment about sex and parents while appearing on Samay Raina's "India's Got Latent". The comment was the source of outrage and prompted Allahbadia, who has almost 16 million followers, to apologize acknowledging that comedy is not his forte.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed, via a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), that numerous social media influencers, Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Makhija, and Samay Raina, were named in an FIR for a sexually explicit discussion. This FIR has been registered under several sections of the law, including Sections 79, 95, 294, and 296 of the BNS 2023 and Section 67 of the IT Act, 2000, along with sections of other relevant statutes, including the Cinematograph Act and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.
Given the rising concerns about obscene content, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has called on the central government to implement stricter regulations for OTT platforms and social media streaming services.
